STAINLESS STEEL 15-5PH

15-5PH stainless steel, also known as 15-5 precipitation-hardening stainless steel or 15-5 PH, is a versatile and high-strength alloy commonly used in various industries. It is part of the PH stainless steel family, which exhibits excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance while offering the ability to be hardened through heat treatment.

Here are some key characteristics and properties of 15-5PH stainless steel:

  1. Composition: The primary elements in 15-5PH stainless steel include approximately 15% chromium, 5% nickel, 3-5% copper, 0.15% carbon, 3-5% manganese, 0.15% phosphorus, 0.03% sulfur, and small amounts of other elements such as silicon and nitrogen.
  2. Precipitation Hardening: 15-5PH stainless steel derives its name from the precipitation hardening process, which involves the formation of fine precipitates of copper and other alloying elements within the material’s microstructure. This process significantly enhances the strength and hardness of the steel.
  3. High Strength: 15-5PH offers excellent strength characteristics, combining high tensile and yield strengths with good toughness. It can achieve a tensile strength of up to 190 ksi (1310 MPa) and a yield strength of up to 170 ksi (1170 MPa) after heat treatment.
  4. Corrosion Resistance: This stainless steel grade provides good corrosion resistance, comparable to other martensitic stainless steels. It performs well in various environments, including mild atmospheres, fresh water, and some corrosive chemicals. However, it may not be suitable for highly acidic or chloride-rich environments without proper surface treatments.
